Old Rice, Young Boy On a long hunt for the old variety of Balinese rice called Padi Bali, I came upon a family harvesting red rice, one of the old varieties. This boy carries a load from the field, bound in a sheaf. The old rice varieties had a longer stem, which permitted this treatment. The new hybrids grow shorter, maximizing production and not “wasting” energy growing a long stem. Photo by Colin Donohue. |
